I’m sure you have heard this before, friend. Our culture is so warped. The pressures put on all of us to look a certain way is ridiculous!
And you know what is even more ridiculous? There are those people who believe that if you do not fit into their mold of a “healthy” body then you couldn’t possibly be in good health. NEWS FLASH: Healthy…NOT skinny!
I don’t care how little or how much someone weighs – neither size constitutes someone as healthy or unhealthy! Nor does either size give someone the permission or ability to define you by it! So what is healthy? And what does “healthy not skinny” really mean?

Healthy is Not Necessarily Skinny
I don’t know why but not only is our culture saturated with the thinking that the thinner you are the healthier you are, but the fitness industry is also saturated with this thought.
Just because someone has a smaller physique than another person does not mean they have a better resting heart rate, they have a healthier body fat percentage, or they have lower blood pressure. Skinny and healthy are not mutually inclusive.
The fitness level of an individual cannot be determined by glancing at their appearance. Within the bodybuilding community, there are women with quite a bit of muscle packed onto a tiny frame.
However, their strength levels aren’t matchable to that of a larger frame and a little more weight on the body – a.k.a. Fit but not skinny.
When I was training for a few bodybuilding shows of my own I was able to lift a lot more when I weighed more. As I lost weight and started cutting for my shows, the weight I could lift decreased.
My Size Doesn’t Define Me
Do you want to know what one of the very unfortunate things is about the size of my body now compared to the size of my body when I was training for my bodybuilding shows?
When someone sees me now and compares what I look like at the moment to those training days – they think I’m out of shape. Their initial reaction is that I am not as healthy as I was back then. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret, sister: Mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually – I am in a much better place now than I was back then!
Our goal should be healthy, not skinny. We should be focusing on feeling our best no matter what size our body is. And feeling our best looks different to everyone. I feel good when I move my body on a regular basis. I feel great when I eat healthy and whole foods. I’m at my best when I spend time with God first thing in the morning. And nothing beats 8 hours of sleep a night! Our size does not define us, girlfriend. It doesn’t have the right to!
Who Defines Me
The only person that will ever have the right to define you is God himself. He created you and made you especially for his purpose. And who are we to argue with that?
When we hate on the body we have, isn’t that basically telling God he did a terrible job?! That’s a slippery slope friend. What defines a person, then? Let’s see what He has to say about the whole “healthy not skinny” concept, shall we?
You were knit together perfectly
He made you exactly how he wanted to make you. And God doesn’t make mistakes, friend. He took his time with you – knitting you together to fulfill his great purpose. You, sister, are fearfully and wonderfully made by the creator of all things! He had a vision of who you would be before he formed you. How special you are to him!
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-16
You are chosen
God chose you. There is no mistaking it. He didn’t say I will choose you if you gain 10lbs. He didn’t say I will choose you if you lose 10lbs. He says:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
You belong to God. You are his. Mind, BODY and soul! He chose you. The God of this universe CHOSE YOU!
Your heart is what matters
Your weight doesn’t define you, friend! It never has and it never will. Here is what defines a person:
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
It doesn’t get much clearer than that! We are here for God’s purpose alone. So God’s opinion is all that matters. And, love – he doesn’t look at the size of your body…he looks at the size of your heart. He wants to know that you are completely sold out to HIM….not this world.
What Determines my Worth
It’s a valid question, isn’t it? We are so used to looking into a mirror or stepping on a scale and giving ourselves a “price tag”. Girlfriend, I understand. Almost all women have fallen into this trap set for us by our culture.
You are not alone!
The path we travel down to find our worth in the world can be dark. But what determines your worth is the light that overcomes that darkness!
Are you ready to travel a new path with me? Let’s scratch out that price tag you’ve stuck on yourself, and put you in the section labeled “keepsakes”, shall we?
Getting to know who you are through the eyes of God is the way to the promised land. I have created for you the IN HIM SCRIPTURE bookmark that you can download and print off. Keep it where you will refer to it often until you realize your true worth. I like to keep mine in my Bible and I took a screenshot for my phone!
Focusing on Healthy Not Skinny
If you read or believe nothing else – read and believe this, sister:
You are not defined by the number on the scale, the image in the mirror, the size of your pants, or the opinions of others.
You are defined solely on who God says you are. And he, friend, says you are wonderfully created. A masterpiece. Set apart. Refined and renewed. Worth more than rubies. Your size doesn’t define you; He does.
If you want to honor God with your body – as we are called to do – focus on getting healthy not skinny! Get your mind, body, and spirit in a healthy state.
Find other like-minded women to share the journey with because we are better together! Remember, you are not alone! So many go through these same thought patterns – but with Christ we overcome! We are worth it!
