My daughter is turning 16 in just a few weeks and over the last year or so, she has slowly been transitioning her “little girl” room into one fit for a teenager. Fortunately, she isn’t into all the frills and enjoys finding inexpensive things to spruce it up.
These are her top picks for budget teen room decor ideas to spruce up even the smallest of bedroom spaces.

How do you decorate a teenage girl’s room on a budget?
My daughter doesn’t do “frills” and prefers her decor to be a bit on the simple side. Giving her room a makeover hasn’t really cost us a lot of money because she always manages to find great deals online from some of her favorite stores.
The best way to find budget decor for your teen’s bedroom is to let her do the shopping for deals. Give her a budget to work from and let her know she has to find the best deals to make that money go further.
- There are lots of savings apps such as Rakuten (formerly Ebates) and RetailMeNot. Make sure she checks these for online coupons and cashback offers for the stores she wants to shop with.
- Most online retailers offer a discount code when you sign up for their newsletter so make sure she does that before making any purchases.
Creative and Budget-Friendly Ideas for Decorating a Teenage Girl’s Bedroom
It really isn’t too hard to find teenage girl bedroom ideas for small rooms on a budget. With all the latest apps, most teens know where to find the best sales on the latest trending stuff to decorate their rooms with.
Simple teen room decor ideas mean simply finding little gems here and there and meshing them into the furniture you already have. Her favorite room decor items include:
- wall tapestries
- string lights
- picture collages
- fake hanging plants and succulents
- accent pillows
A really great way to add some color and character to a room without having to paint is to simply hand a large wall tapestry above the bed! My daughter found one that almost covers the entire wall on one side of her room. Wall tapestries are great ideas for teen room decor because you can find one to match just about any and every color or style.
Shein and Romwe always have a good selection of tapestries to choose from, plus they have a lot of other trendy knick-knacks for decorating your teen’s bedroom. You can also find additional designs on Amazon.
One thing that hasn’t gone out of style since I was a teenager is string lights! I had them strung all over my bedroom back in the day! The only thing is that there are way more styles than what I had back in my day. You can go with the traditional style of string lights or go a little on the fancy side with
- butterfly lights
- curtain lights
- heart lights
- icicle string lights
Picture Frame Collage
A staple of every teenage girl’s bedroom decor is a ton of pictures of her and all her friends! Table-top picture frames are “so yesterday” according to my daughter so she prefers these hanging collages with clips that look like clothespins. She actually has this one but there are some that are a bit fancier with shaped lights.
Fake Plants and Succulents
My daughter is obsessed with succulents right now! She definitely prefers the fake ones so she doesn’t have to “be responsible” and water them. She has them on her bookshelf and dresser. This makes easy gift ideas for her throughout the year. Usually, places like Walmart have seasonal styles to choose from. They are also really inexpensive and you can buy them individually or as part of a matching set.
Aside from the succulents, adding some fake plants to hang in the corners of the ceiling can also add a bit of color and nature to a painted wall.
Accent pillows are great because you can totally change the vibe of a teenage girl’s bedroom simply by switching them out! My daughter’s bed has one side against a wall so she has probably 15 pillows there to add color but also to use as a prop when she is doing homework on the laptop.
Be Ready for Major Changes!
Having a daughter transitioning from being your little, sweet girl into a head-strong teenager can be a bit of a challenge. While you want to keep her your sweet little girl forever, the reality is that she is now starting to come into her own. Don’t be surprised when she wants to make stark changes to her room – with styles or colors that you totally hate!
Just remember that this isn’t about you! Even if you totally hate it, just let this be HER space for her to design in a way that makes her feel comfortable. I promise that she will eventually grow into another style before you know it!
Of course, you may have to draw the line if she decides she wants to paint the walls black because that takes a LOT of work to undo later 🙂
